About Callejas Work

Juan Carlos Callejas Garzon, born in the heart of Cali, Colombia, is an artist whose life and work are deeply connected to the cultural and social dynamics of his hometown. His deep passion for art and philosophy characterizes his artistic career, and Callejas devoted himself early on to studying and exploring the representation of the human figure in urban space. He is particularly fascinated by the construction of reality in the simple scenes of everyday life.

Juan Callejas’ work emerges from classical figuration while deliberately placing it within a contemporary context. Particularly interested in portraiture, Callejas approaches it in an unconventional way—not as a search for likeness, but as a means to explore the relationships between memory, experience, and the present.

For Callejas, the artwork is not an isolated object but the result of an interplay between material, space, time, and action. His work and technique arise from a continuous, exploratory engagement with materials and manufacturing processes. In his practice, materials are active participants rather than passive supports. He works with non-standardized, partly industrial materials such as fiberglass mesh, whose open structure allows transparency and permeability and gives the image an open, spatial quality. In many of his recent works, the material functions simultaneously as support, structure, and surface. Without a conventional background, the material itself becomes the pictorial ground, appearing almost to stand freely in space and shaping the spatial presence of the image. Image, structure, and surface develop simultaneously, forming translucent connections with the surrounding environment.

Color plays a central role in this process. Callejas produces his own acrylic paints from pure pigments coming from Colombia and uses personal recipes developed over years of experimentation. He mainly applies the paint with a palette-knife technique he has developed over many years. Through layering, transparency, and varied surfaces, multiple levels of perception emerge. In his paintings, color is not merely a means of representation but a physical substance through which figuration and abstraction enter into a dynamic balance.

The portraits and urban scenes in his work do not depict specific individuals or situations. Instead, they emerge from inner images, emotional memory, and decisions made within an open working process. In this sense, the portrait becomes a field of exploration rather than a representation of identity, where personal experience and broader social dynamics converge.

Throughout his career, Callejas has had the privilege of sharing his artistic vision with people all over the world.
